For individuals with impaired sensation, the process of transferring out of a wheelchair can be especially difficult. The lack of sensation makes it difficult to recognize when one has lifted out of his or her seat, requiring one to rely on equilibrium and muscle memory to transfer safely.
The most efficient way to transfer is by leaning forward; however, leaning forward puts those with impaired sensation at increased risk of falling due to difficulties in determining balance and position.
The Transfer Assistant feature provides instant visual and audible feedback to the user as they begin to lift up off their seat. As weight on the seat changes, an audible tone changes in pitch and the Pressure Assistant’s LED bar changes to reflect the amount of pressure being applied.
